"Nearly all of us either have had or have heard of an experience in which a soul already departed reaches back to us who have been left behind... Sometimes, it's no more than a whisper, a familiar smell in the air, or just the feeling of presence as vivid as when the loved one was still alive. These moments are just that... moments, a glimpse behind the veil; not a letter from heaven, but a postcard. The message is a simple one: Got here safe It's really beautiful Much love till we meet again" -Dan Gordon, POSTCARDS FROM HEAVEN |

POSTCARDS FROM HEAVEN: Messages of Love from the Other Side (Free Press; November 4, 2008; $19.95), is screenwriter and playwright Dan Gordon's beautiful, inspirational memoir of four generations of a remarkable family and how they remain interconnected, a part of one another's stories, even after passing to the other side. A postcard from heaven is a "whisper, a familiar smell in the air, or just the feeling or presence" of someone who's passed away. It is just enough of a message to imply that what we call life is not ended by what we call death. After the sudden, tragic death of his twenty-two-year-old firstborn son, Zaki, Gordon received a particularly poignant postcard from his long dead father, who was not only Zaki's grandfather, but his Godfather, the one responsible for his spirit. The one responsible for his soul. After receiving this "postcard" that literally was a hundred years old and written in stone, Gordon "felt the kind of relief only a parent knows when he realizes his child has arrived safely home." With uplifting messages for everyone, POSTCARDS FROM HEAVEN has stories about fathers, brothers, mothers, great-grandfathers, and sons, and the messages they send from the other side. Gordon writes of his father's long life, from the Russian Revolution to his improbable Depression-era courtship of a woman named Goddess - Gordon's mother - to his spiritual later years in Israel. He also writes of his incorrigible older brother's mischievous magic, able to find outrageous humor even while dying of cancer; and of the message he received from his brother from the other side. Finally, there is the story of his brilliant son, a natural storyteller who looked destined to follow his father into the movie business before his sudden and tragic death, and of the healing postcards Gordon received; the kind no one could possible see as mere coincidence, the kind that tell us neither love, nor life ends with what we call death. POSTCARDS FROM HEAVEN is about experiencing and exploring life's great mysteries of love, death, and beyond. "Do we have the answers to life and death?" asks Linda Gray in the foreword of the book. "Probably not, but this wonderful book opens us up to the grand notion that perhaps life just might be eternal... the ultimate postcard." Full of humor, compassion, and love, POSTCARDS FROM HEAVEN comforts and assures us that those we loved can reach back to those of us still on earth - and, if only we are attentive enough to listen, we can hear them say, "Got here safe. It's really beautiful. Much love, till we meet again."
